Introducing our supervisors

Outside of language training times, times, our experienced team of supervisors is responsible for looking after the camp participants around the clock. They spend the night with the participants in the house, accompany them on the way to lessons, supervise all leisure activities and are always available to answer any questions. Some of our long-standing supervisors introduce themselves here.

What experience have you already had working with children (apart from CDC)?

  • Several internships in kindergarten
  • Internship semester at the Evangelische Jugendhilfe Freiburg-Zähringen (primary school day group for children with psychosocial problems)
  • Tour guide for youth trips abroad
  • Internship abroad at the German school Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (bilingual)

Why did you apply to work at the language camp back then?

  • Because of my many positive experiences as part of a host family for CDC language students.
  • I was looking for a new challenge in an international context, but one that didn't involve moving abroad and was compatible with my studies.

Why did you decide to return after your first experience?

  • I really enjoyed my first year at work and at the same time it gave me the opportunity to develop both personally and professionally.
  • I really liked the international composition of the participants and the team, as well as the resulting atmosphere.
  • The flat hierarchies at the camp put a lot of emphasis on personal initiative and responsibility. I really liked this as a prerequisite.

What was your best experience at the language camp?

  • A stand-up paddle tour to Mettnau-Spitze, where all the participants had a lot of fun together.
  • The way the team worked together as equals and the mutual support when difficulties arose.

What are you studying?

  • I'm studying to become a special education teacher for learning disabilities at the Julius Maximillian University in Würzburg

What experience have you already had working with children (apart from CDC)?

  • Au pair stay in Spain in a family with three children, they were 13, 11 and 7 years old and a family with a 1.5 year old baby. In addition, some internships at elementary school: 4 weeks at the Buchenbergschule Konstanz and 4 weeks at the Bernrainschule Kreuzlingen as well as in kindergartens: 1 week at the Kita Litzelstetten and also one week at the Kinderhaus zum Salzberg. The last two weeks (06/04/2019–21/04/2019) I was on Gran Canaria and worked in a hotel with the children's entertainment (Mini-Club).

Why did you apply to work at the language camp back then?

  • I applied because I always wanted to work with children. No other job is as much fun and varied for me as working with children. Of course, you sometimes need strong nerves, especially with so many children from so many different cultures, but for me the fun factor outweighs everything else and you can always learn an incredible amount. I used to go to camps a lot myself, so I also found it interesting to see the camp from a different perspective, so to speak.

Why did you decide to get involved again after your first experience?

  • I decided to work again because I had no reason not to. The cooperation with the other tutors and the camp management went smoothly and there were no other problems. I had a lot of fun at the last camp and am already looking forward to the next one!

What was your best experience at the language camp?

  • My best experience at the camp: You experience so much that I can't even express it in one experience. The best moments are probably when you realize that the children like what you do with them. It's also nice to see how friendships form and how they help and support each other. When they say goodbye: "I hope to see you next year" and it sounds like a small confirmation that the effort was definitely worth it. It's also probably the moment when the children have finally fallen asleep, because it always feels like an eternity before you've managed to do that.

My experience working as a supervisor

"This, I must say, was one of the best decisions I ever made!  We had kids from all over the world and the supervisors, too. This made the whole experience very intriguing because you get to see various situations in a different perspective - through the kid’s eyes. The camp was in one of the most sought after destinations in Germany – Baden Württemberg – and the setting was very family friendly. Because of the various kids’ background, the target language is easily achieved since the kids have to interact with one another (we had a be-your-brother’s-keeper culture). Overall I’d say it won´t be a mistake to try it. Whether as a supervisor or a language learner…"
